SOFTBALL

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Close games were the order of the day as the Northern Kentucky University softball team picked up a pair of one-run victories in Day 3 action at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Norse needed nine innings to defeat Shippensburg, 3-2, in the opener before picking up a 4-3 win over St. Cloud State in Game 2. NKU improves to 8-6 on the season with the wins.

Gretchen Lorenz was the offensive star for the Norse, going 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in the twin bill. April Ehlers (5-4) got the win in Game 1 and earned her first save of the season in Game 2.

Lorenz's first double of the day put the Norse on the board against Shippensburg, scoring Ashley Gates, who walked to open the second inning. Shippensburg got the run back in the fourth inning on an RBI-single from Abby Block.

The pitchers held the 1-1 score through seven innings, forcing the international tiebreaker, where a Jill Mullan sacrifice fly plated a run for the Raiders in the top of the eighth. The Norse returned the favor in the bottom of the inning when Alesa Collinsworth scored on a Jamie Raabe single.

After the Norse held Shippensburg scoreless in the top of the ninth, It was Jessica Farris scoring on a Gates sacrifice fly to end the game.

Ehlers gave up just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters in nine innings of work.

Emily Schwaeble got the offense going for NKU in Game 2, slicing a two-run double down the left field line in the top of the first inning. Rose Broderick followed up in the second inning with an RBI-groundout to extend the lead to 3-0.

Stephanie West drove in a run in the top of the fourth inning and the Norse appeared to be cruising until the Huskies stormed back in the fifth inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring three runs on four hits.

The Norse bore down and got out of the inning, retiring the final six Husky batters to take the win.

Chelsie Roy (2-2) got the victory in the circle, going four strong innings allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. West added a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.

SOFTBALL

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Northern Kentucky University's Emily Schwaeble went 4-for-7 on the day and picked up her first collegiate win as the Norse softball team picked up a pair of victories in Day 2 action at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Norse (6-6) slugged out 15 hits in a 10-2 victory over Clarion before using a one-hit pitching performance from April Ehlers to post a 5-0 shutout over California (Pa.).

Schwaeble, a graduate of Colerain High School, was tested early, having to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning before coming back to slam a two-run double to left center field in the bottom half.

Rose Broderick came through with a three-run triple in the second inning, while Schwaeble brought her in on an RBI-single to extend the lead to 6-0. Katie Sullivan picked up her first collegiate base hit and RBI in the third, going back up the middle to plate Jamie Raabe.

The Norse picked up RBI-singles from Schwaeble, Raabe and Sullivan in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Schwaeble (1-0) was solid in the circle, as well, scattering three hits and giving up two runs, one earned, while striking out seven in the complete-game victory. In addition, she went 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the offense. Eight of the nine NKU starters collected at least one base hit, with four different players going 2-for-3 on the game.

Game 2 saw the Norse jump out to the early lead again, scoring on a Broderick RBI-single in the top of the first inning.

Ehlers was on fire from the start, retiring the first 11 batters she saw in order. She would help her own cause in the third inning, smashing a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.

A defensive miscue from the Vulcans defense allowed Chelsea Luessen to plate a run in the sixth inning before Stephanie West added an RBI-single to right to a 3-for-3 performance.

Ehlers (4-4) allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters to claim her second shutout of the season. Gretchen Lorenz also stood out with a 2-for-3 Game 2 performance.

SOFTBALL

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Northern Kentucky University's April Ehlers had a stellar day in the circle but came away with a pair of hard-luck losses in Day 1 action at the Rebel Spring Games.

Ehlers struck out 14 batters in a 2-0 loss to Saginaw Valley before pitching two innings of relief in a 3-2 loss to Concordia-St. Paul. The losses dropped NKU to 4-6 on the season.

It was a pitcher's dual in Game 1, with SVSU's Jade Fulton going stride-for-stride and strikeout-for-strikeout with Ehlers throughout the contest.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Division II national poll, struck in the top of the first inning when Ashley Jordan doubled home Lauren Memmer for the early advantage.

Ehlers continued to pitch out of jam after jam, leaving the bases full of Cardinals in the second and seventh frames.

NKU's best chance came in the second inning, when Emily Schwaeble singled up the middle to lead off the stanza. After Ehlers popped up on a sacrifice bunt attempt, Schwaeble got to second when the Cardinals sailed the double-play attempt into right field. A wild pitch got the freshman to third base, where she would be stranded after Fulton bore down and picked up a pair of strikeouts.

Rose Broderick added a double in the sixth inning.

Ehlers finished the game with 14 strikeouts, allowing eight hits and two runs in seven innings of work. Fulton picked up 15 strikeouts for Saginaw Valley.

Game 2 started hopefully for the Norse, with a Jessica Farris walk and a Broderick single, taking an additional base on the throw in, quickly putting runners on second and third in the top of the first inning. An illegal pitch then plated NKU's first run of the day.

A walk to Ashley Gates and a Schwaeble single put the Norse in business again in the fourth inning, allowing Ehlers to bring a run in on a misplayed grounder to second, scoring Gates to give NKU a 2-0 lead.

It all evaporated in the sixth inning, however, when an RBI-double to left and an illegal pitch gave the Golden Bears a pair of runs and evened the score. Concordia would win the game in extra innings, holding NKU scoreless in the top of the eighth inning before scoring on a Cali Brennan RBI-single in the bottom half to end the game.

Chelsie Roy got the start and gave up six hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out two in the process. Ehlers (3-4) took the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts in two innings.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A three-run double from Patrick Muth capped a six-run eighth inning and helped spring the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Henderson State on Sunday.

Muth went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in, while Bryan Rose was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. NKU improved to 6-3 on the season with the win.

The eighth-inning fireworks started with back-to-back singles from Rose and Shannon McCormick before Brian Erie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. An infield single from Max Colaner plated the first run of the frame and made way for a two-run single from Derek Jones. Jason Cisper walked to load the bases once again and make way for Muth's monster double to break the game open at 8-3.

The action wasn't over, however, as Henderson State came back with a grand slam from Lee Harris to draw the game back within one run.

Muth's first double of the day followed Cisper's leadoff two-bagger in the top of the first inning. With the hit, Cisper extended his hitting streak to 33 games dating back to last season.

The Reddies came back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead before the Norse drew the score level once more in the fourth inning on a Colaner sacrifice fly to score Rose, who singled to lead off the frame.

Henderson State retook the lead after Kendal Norman took a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a Ryan Ellis single before coming in when Evan Eary grounded into a double play.

Andy Heston (2-0) threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win, striking out two batters in the process. Chase Stewart threw the final 1 1/3 innings of the game to earn his first save in an NKU uniform.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Jason Cisper went 4-for-8 to help the Northern Kentucky University baseball team salvage a doubleheader split against Henderson State on Saturday.

Henderson State took Game 1 by a 4-2 margin while NKU took the nightcap, 7-4.

Cisper extended his hitting streak to 32 games while Shannon McCormick and Jeff Bohlen each had three runs batted in, helping the Norse move to 5-3 on the season.

Game 1 saw the Norse strike first in the top of the second inning, scoring on a Cisper double that plated McCormick, who singled to open the frame.

The Reddies fired back in the fifth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back hits to open the frame and a passed ball later in the stanza to score three runs and take the lead. Kendal Norman gave the Reddies an insurance run in the seventh inning, launching a home run over the centerfield wall.

The Norse fought back in the top of the ninth inning, putting a run across on a Patrick Muth single. The rally ended in heartbreak fashion, however, as Bohlen, representing the go-ahead run, grounded into a double play to end the game.

Dave Middendorf (2-1) pitched a solid game, giving up two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in a hard-luck loss. Cisper was 2-for-5 with an RBI on the game while McCormick went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Evan McDole added a pair of doubles in a 2-for-3 game.

NKU once again drew first blood in Game 2, this time plating five runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a two-run Bohlen single and a three-run McCormick double, both coming with two outs in the inning.

The Reddies scrapped their way back into the game, scoring runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to draw within two runs. The Norse put their foot back on the gas in the top of the seventh inning, with Muth and Bohlen each driving in runs to pad the Norse lead.

Ryan Schmidt (2-1) got the win, scattering five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Kevin Jordan struck out four batters in the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the season.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - There was no need for a change in the game plan as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team continued its offensive onslaught from a day prior to slug out a 15-1 victory over Christian Brothers on Sunday afternoon.

Jason Cisper and Brian Erie each went 2-for-2 on the game as the Norse combined for 14 hits on the contest. With the win, NKU moves to 4-2 on

inning.

The Norse took advantage of four walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and two Buccaneer errors to plate seven runs in the fifth inning.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - There was no shortage of offense on Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team pounded out a pair of big wins over Christian Brothers in an afternoon doubleheader.

NKU (3-2) took the first game by a 20-3 margin before completing the sweep with a 9-4 win in Game 2.

The Norse slammed on the gas early in Game 1, using back-to-back singles from Jason Cisper and Patrick Muth to open the top of the first inning to plate the game's first run. Shannon McCormick got in the mix as well, slamming his third home run of the season over the left-field wall to close out the four-run inning.

Bryan Rose added his first home run in a Norse uniform, sending a towering fly ball over the right field wall to plate two more runs in the top of the third inning. Cisper added a two-run single later in the inning before Muth closed out the five-run inning with an RBI-single of his own.

NKU exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning, including a pair of hits from Jeff Bohlen, who led off the inning with a home run before pulling a single to right field later in the frame. McCormick, Max Colaner and Derek Jones added RBI-singles in the frame while McDole pushed a two-run double up the left field line.

Freshman catcher Patrick Hyde put the punctuation mark on the game with his three-run homer to right field in the sixth inning. Hyde unleashed the home run in just his second collegiate at-bat.

Eight of the nine NKU starters claimed base hits with four players - Cisper, Rose, McCormick and Hyde - knocking in three runs each. The 20-run outburst was the most since March 30, 2001, when the Norse defeated Transylvania, 21-10.

The Norse pitching was typically stellar, with Dave Middendorf (2-0) going four innings with five strikeouts in the start. Jim Ryan and Bryan Baldini combined for three innings of scoreless relief in the game.

NKU started the hitting early again in Game 2, hanging three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning on back-to-back RBI-singles from Bohlen and Rose before McCormick followed up with a sacrifice fly. Bohlen came back with a two-run single in the top of the second inning to give the Norse the early 5-0 lead.

Larry Pempek added to the momentous day by sending a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for his first collegiate home run in the third inning.

Colaner was the offensive star of the game, going 3-for-3 on the game and scored three runs, while Bohlen went 3-for-4 and drove in three more.

Andy Heston (1-0) got the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief work for starter Jarrett Casey. Kevin Jordan set a new school record with his 77th career (77th-career) pitching appearance, going the final 2 1/3 innings to garner his first save of the season.
